Ray-Ban Personalities: Mark Seliger

Ray-Ban Personalities - Mark Seliger

It may seem that Ray-Ban is a brand of sunglasses and medical frames, so why focus on personalities? On one hand, this is true, but on the other — it is important to understand that behind each legendary lens, frame, model, or advertisement stands an equally legendary person or team.

In this article, we will focus on a person without whom two of Ray-Ban's most successful advertising campaigns, Never Hide and Envision, would not have existed. That person is Mark Seliger.

Who is who?

Mark Seliger is a cult American photographer known for his portraits of world-renowned stars from the music and film industries. He was born in 1959 in Texas and later enrolled in the School of Visual Arts.

In 1984, Seliger moved to New York, and in 1992, his fateful collaboration with Rolling Stone magazine began. He worked there for 10 years, gaining fame for creating unique portraits of Kurt Cobain and other equally controversial musicians.

Since 2002, Mark Seliger has worked for Vanity Fair and GQ magazines, expanding his portfolio with works featuring many actors and models.

Iconic Advertising

Mark Seliger's collaboration with Ray-Ban began in 2011, a year before the brand's 75th anniversary. Without a doubt, such a significant milestone in the field of sunglasses required something memorable and grand.

This gave rise to the Never Hide advertising campaign, created by Seliger. Each photo in the project represented one of the generations in the history of these famous glasses. The characters in the photos find themselves in extraordinary situations, never hiding and always showing their individuality!

Critics and the public were thrilled with the campaign. Everyone noted that Seliger displayed extraordinary talent, going all out to capture the spirit of each era in Ray-Ban's history.

But that was just the beginning. In November of the same year, 2012, filming for the next advertising campaign, Never Hide Envision, began. Once again, behind the camera was Mark Seliger!

The photographs feature personalities who, like in the previous campaign, possess strength of character and prioritize actions over words. The campaign highlights the lens qualities that Ray-Ban has always focused on: high durability, darkening, impact resistance, anti-glare, comfort in motion, and longevity.

Looking at these photos, it becomes clear that high quality for Ray-Ban is not just a phrase. It’s not only about the technology and design of the glasses but also the people who are part of the brand's history.

People like Mark Seliger, who managed to capture the true spirit of Ray-Ban, its boldness in innovation and style. His undeniable talent did not go unnoticed: the 59th and 60th Cannes Lions ended in an unquestionable victory for the Never Hide and Envision advertising campaigns!
