Ray-Ban Aluminum Frames: Earth's First Metal
…And outside the window in the youthful frost
lie fields of aluminum…
A. Voznesensky "Autumn"
From glass, tableware, and jewelry to pyrotechnics, building materials, and various mechanisms — these are just a few of the fields where aluminum is used.
And if you're wondering how well this metal works for sunglasses production, Ray-Ban's aluminum frames are just what you need.
Element № 13
The year 1825. As a result of a chemical experiment, Danish physicist Hans Ørsted first obtained aluminum, whose name comes from the Latin "alumen," meaning alum.
Aluminum is a lightweight, silvery-white metal and the thirteenth element in the periodic table. It is easily processed, molded, and cast.
What does this have to do with glasses?
Despite the serious and somewhat intimidating descriptions, aluminum seems almost tailor-made for eyewear frame production.
This metal is corrosion-resistant, biocompatible, and hypoallergenic. Additionally, it is phenomenally light: twice as light as titanium and three times lighter than steel.
Of course, like any material, aluminum has its drawbacks, namely — low strength and elasticity. To avoid these issues, thicker layers of the metal are used in production, for example: thick eyewear frames.
It’s also worth noting the challenges of welding and soldering aluminum parts. These methods are often replaced by using rivets or screws, which are easier to install and replace if necessary.
Clubmasters Join the Ranks
Ray-Ban has long offered its Active Lifestyle collection, featuring aluminum sunglasses.
And in the spring of 2013, the range expanded with the re-released Aluminum Clubmasters.
This new model, made of lightweight aluminum, features a new design for the temples, with protein "sleeves" added to the ends. In addition, the sunglasses come in four color variations: bronze frames with brown or gray lenses, black with green lenses, and, of course, silver with gray lenses.
As we can see, this material is becoming increasingly relevant and popular in the fashion "sunglass" industry today.
So if you're intrigued by aluminum and frames made from it, Ray-Ban and we have something to offer you =):
