Ray-Ban G-31 Mirror Lens: Extreme Chrome

Ray-Ban G-31 Mirror Lens: extreme chrome

Ray-Ban G31 Mirror Lens

People can be divided into two categories: those who love mirrored sunglasses and those who don’t. Similarly, everyone can be divided into fans of an active lifestyle, sports, and adrenaline, and those who prefer home comfort, fireplaces, and sofas.

If you belong to the first group in both categories, then you definitely need Ray-Ban sunglasses with the G-31 chrome lens.

The “colorful” element

Chromium is a blue-white metal, an element of the fourth group of the Periodic Table. It was discovered back in 1766 near Yekaterinburg.

The name of the element comes from Greek and translates as color/paint due to the variety of shades in its compounds. As for the special characteristics of chromium, the metal is common in nature, easily undergoes mechanical processing, and is one of the hardest pure metals (second only to uranium, beryllium, and tungsten).

Chromium and optics

In the 1970s, Ray-Ban launched two new models, Vagabond and Stateside, made in plastic frames and offered with two lens options: the classic G-15 with a gray-green tint and the G-31 mirrored lens in silver. The latter, G-31, was coated with a thin layer of chromium on the outside, which gave it several advantages.

The G31 lens is a RECORD HOLDER in visible light absorption (along with two others: RB-50 and Gradient Mirror): 92% — that’s how much sunlight the lens filters, making it ideal for fans of ski resorts, Arctic expeditions, and desert travel — places known for their extreme brightness. However, such sunglasses are nearly considered specialized and are not recommended for everyday use (especially for driving).

In addition to its low light transmission (only 8%), this lens provides 100% UV protection and does not distort colors. Plus, the chrome coating makes the outer surface more durable and increases its reflectivity, helping to combat excessive light and curious glances from passersby.

The G-31 lens sunglasses are designed for extreme conditions, so it’s essential that they meet US government standards and exceed ANSI optical standards.

So if you’ve already planned a grand adventure full of danger, adrenaline, and, most importantly, plenty of sunlight, don’t hesitate: Ray-Ban sunglasses with the G-31 lens will be the perfect companion!
