Ray-Ban Caribbean: like rum, but even better
The topic of Ray-Ban introducing new models by transforming existing ones has come up more than once. Often, one of the classic, "veteran" models is modified either in lens shape or overall size — and voilà, a new collection is born, familiar yet distinct from its predecessor!
This often happens with the Aviator, Clubmaster, and Wayfarer. One such variation of the latter is the Ray-Ban Caribbean.
Sixties-style sunglasses
In Ray-Ban's history, each decade was productive. The sixties stood out in their own way: by the end of the decade, the brand had over 50 models! Olympian I and II, Balorama, Meteor, and Laramie were created, and every Bob Dylan fan knew he never left home without his black Wayfarers.
At that time, specifically in 1964, the Ray-Ban Caribbean appeared, seamlessly fitting into the style of the era. "Caribbean," as the name suggests, brings to mind thoughts of travel, leisurely strolls, and soaking up the sun.
How things are on the Caribbean
Ray-Ban Caribbean are sunglasses with a wide plastic frame, mostly in tortoise color. Unlike their prototype, the Wayfarer, they are more compact, though still similar in shape: rectangular with softened edges.
A subtle emphasis on the outer upper corners gives these sunglasses a resemblance to the ever-popular "Cat Eye" shape, which draws attention to the wearer's eyes. Additional attention is drawn to the corners by two rivets, a signature feature of several Ray-Ban models.
One cannot overlook the interesting combination of a plastic frame with mineral glass — a natural material for lenses. Moreover, the Caribbean collection offers both classic and gradient lenses (where the color fades from dark to light, an ideal feature for driving).
Although this is a unisex model, it seems to appeal more to women. Abby Cornish, Reese Witherspoon, and other famous women today choose the Caribbean model.
If you love Wayfarers but their widespread popularity gives you pause, or if you're looking for something similar but distinct, then Ray-Ban Caribbean is worth a closer look. They're like Caribbean rum, only better!
