Ray-Ban Carbon Frames: Proud Plastic
Airplanes, rockets, ships, prosthetics, fishing gear, musical instrument strings, and of course, Ray-Ban eyeglass frames – all of these are made from a composite material known as carbon fiber.
And if the practical application of scientific and technological achievements excites you, or if your glasses constantly fall and break, you simply must pay attention to carbon frames.
What's the Point?
Carbon (also known as carbon fiber) is a relatively new material made from carbon fibers bonded together with various resins.
These fibers are highly resistant to tearing and stretching – that's a plus, but they have low compressive strength – that's a minus.
To avoid such issues, carbon fibers are woven together at specific angles and combined with resins and polymer fibers, resulting in a material with enhanced strength comparable to many metals. Additionally, carbon fiber is 40% lighter than steel and 20% lighter than aluminum.
These qualities allow carbon fiber to be used in many high-tech elite eyewear frames.
Ray-Ban: A Step Toward the Future
In 2009, the company launched the new Ray-Ban Tech collection, featuring innovative carbon models for the first time in eyewear history.
Carbon began to be used to create temple arms, which were made from a single block of carbon fiber. First, thousands of carbon fibers are woven into a thread. Then, the woven threads are made into a film. Under high temperatures, these films are fused together to create the temple arms.
Today, carbon fiber is used not only for the temple arms but also for other frame components. Ray-Ban offers a wide range of carbon fiber frames: from the beloved Aviator to purely sporty models!
What do we, as consumers, gain from using carbon fiber in frames? First, low weight (no more than 15 grams). Second, durability and strength (thanks to the flexibility of the fibers). And third, almost jewelry-like precision, as carbon allows for the creation of thin and precise details! Such is the proud type of plastic known as CARBON.
And Ray-Ban already offers over 40 eyewear models made from it:
